In September 2001, the investors contacted NORTECH again to determine if the cleanup actions that had been undertaken were appropriate. All the drums, vehicles, batteries, and most of the other debris had been removed with a limited amount of soil. NORTECH installed a series of direct push monitoring wells to identify potential groundwater impacts at the site. The sample results shows limited fuel contamination around the SAS, and contaminants of concern were not detected in the groundwater at other areas of concern. NORTECH
recommended removal of the SAS, identified by ADEC and EPA as a Class
V Injection Well, and limited trenching in the drum storage areas to
investigate any potential remaining subsurface soil contamination. The
SAS was removed using EPA Underground Injection Control Program guidelines
in October 2001. The unit was replaced with a holding tank in November
2001. Approximately 50 cubic yards of contaminated soil were removed
and taken to OIT for thermal remediation. No contaminants were detected
in samples collected during exploratory trenching in former drum storage
areas.
