Chevak Former BIA School
ABCA and Site Restoration in Chevak, Alaska.
NORTECH was contracted by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation to evaluate cleanup options for the former BIA School in Chevak through an Analysis of Brownfield Cleanup Alternatives. Our team identified feasible approaches that would have allowed the building to be safely renovated and reoccupied.
Before redevelopment could occur, the school was destroyed in a 2020 fire. NORTECH quickly adapted, providing on-site oversight during debris removal in partnership with Republic Services. We worked to identify and segregate potentially hazardous waste, directing nonhazardous materials to the asbestos cell at the Chevak landfill and ensuring proper closure of the cell at project completion.
Following debris removal, NORTECH conducted soil assessments to confirm that asbestos and other hazardous materials were eliminated from the site. With cleanup complete and the property restored, the community was left with a safe site ready for future use.
