Chichagof Island Former Cannery
Environmental Assessment in Chichagof Island, Alaska.
NORTECH completed a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment and Hazardous Building Materials Assessment for the former Chatham Cannery property at the southeastern tip of Chichagof Island. Originally constructed as a salmon cannery, the remote property has since been repurposed to provide power generation, caretaker services, and limited fuel sales. The site included multiple standing buildings, collapsed structures, and a tank farm of four 20,000-gallon fuel tanks.
In addition to meeting ASTM E1527 standards, NORTECH evaluated potential asbestos-containing materials, lead-based paint, and petroleum-impacted soils. Based on our findings, we recommended a Phase II investigation to further delineate areas of petroleum contamination exceeding regulatory cleanup levels.
This project demonstrates NORTECH’s expertise in conducting environmental due diligence in remote Alaska communities, addressing both regulatory requirements and site-specific concerns to help clients plan safe redevelopment strategies.
