YRITWC Multi-Community
Environmental Assessments at Multiple Locations in Rural Alaska.
On behalf of the Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council (YRITWC), NORTECH supported environmental assessment and community engagement efforts across several rural Alaska communities, including Alakanuk, Huslia, Grayling, and Russian Mission.
In Alakanuk and Huslia, our team facilitated community meetings to gather input from tribal leaders, residents, and local stakeholders. These discussions identified priority sites such as the “Boneyard” in Alakanuk, where aging vehicles and storage tanks were compounded by riverbank erosion, and the “Old Barge Landing” in Huslia, where abandoned drums and stained soils raised contamination concerns. Community perspectives were integrated into project planning, ensuring that local knowledge guided site security and future land use strategies.
NORTECH also implemented a series of environmental assessments to characterize site conditions and support reuse planning. Scope included ASTM-compliant Phase I ESAs in Alakanuk and Huslia, a targeted Phase II ESA with soil and groundwater sampling in Grayling, and a Hazardous Building Materials Survey in Russian Mission. Each investigation produced a detailed technical report with risk evaluations and actionable recommendations tailored to both regulatory requirements and community priorities.
This project reflects NORTECH’s ability to combine technical expertise with community-based engagement, helping Alaska’s rural villages manage environmental risks while planning for safe and sustainable redevelopment.
