Wrangell Junkyard
Lead Contaminated Soil Cleanup and Management in Wrangell, Alaska.
NORTECH supported the cleanup and long-term management of lead-contaminated soil at the former Wrangell Junkyard, a site that posed risks to both the community and the environment. In 2016, our team worked alongside NRC Alaska to oversee the excavation and stockpiling of more than 18,000 cubic yards of impacted soil, developing planning documents, sampling strategies, and field screening methods that ensured reliable results and cost-effective execution.
In the years that followed, NORTECH helped plan and oversee the safe management and eventual removal of the contaminated material. Our services included developing monitoring and sampling plans, preparing stormwater pollution prevention measures, and providing detailed documentation for regulatory review. NORTECH also hosted public forums to share project information and address community questions, building transparency and trust in the selected approach.
Through careful planning, effective field methods, and open communication, NORTECH helped reduce risks from legacy contamination while supporting a sustainable solution for the long-term protection of Wrangell’s community and natural resources.
